Description

Aqal (Arabic: Aqal) is an accessory that is used to keep the chafieh in place.

Aqal is a ring woven from thread or plant fiber that Arabs used in the past to bind camel’s knees and put on the head to hold the chafieh.

Aqal is one of the official clothes of Arab men in many Arab countries and it is decorated with velvet fabrics or precious threads of silver and gold and precious stones and gems such as agate, turquoise and jade. There were different types of aqal in the Ottoman Empire and the best type was made in Sham and Hijaz.

Even today, in many Arab regions such as Syria, Iraq, Palestine, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, UAE, and Iran, especially in Khuzestan province, Bushehr and Hormuzgan, parts of Ilam, aqal is used in men’s clothing.
